Florence Leblanc Dubois

Originaire de Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal, Florence Leblanc Dubois est une artiste visuelle fortement influencée par les arts vivants. D’abord attirée par l’interprétation, elle obtient son baccalauréat à l’école supérieure de théâtre de l’UQAM en 2019. Le premier confinement l’oblige ensuite à ralentir et à explorer de nouveaux moyens d’expression : la photographie et la broderie. Artiste visuelle autodidacte, elle s’intéresse à la douceur et à son partage. Que ce soit par un jeu de floue, d’exposition ou en honorant les défauts pouvant survenir en cours du processus, l’artiste invite la surprise et la candeur à son travail. Puis c’est dans l’idée de rendre hommage au souvenir et au changement, de jouer avec l’imaginaire et d’attirer l’attention sur certains détails qu’elle intervient directement sur l’image avec des motifs brodés à la main. Sa série Hommage à la lenteur a été exposée au café La Brume dans mes lunettes (2021) et sa première exposition solo Saint-Denis, du nord au sud a été présentée à la Galerie POPOP (2022).

Originally from Tio’tia:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal, Florence Leblanc Dubois is a visual artist strongly influenced by the performing arts. Initially drawn to acting, she obtained her bachelor’s degree from UQAM’s École supérieure de théâtre in 2019. The initial confinement then forced her to slow down and explore new means of expression: photography and embroidery. A self-taught visual artist, she is interested in softness and sharing it. Whether it is through a game of blurring, exposure or honouring the flaws that can occur in the process, the artist invites surprise and candour into her work. Then it is with the idea of paying homage to memory and change, playing with the imagination and drawing attention to certain details that she intervenes directly on the image with hand-embroidered motifs. Her series Hommage à la lenteur was exhibited at the café La Brume dans mes lunettes (2021) and her first solo exhibition Saint-Denis, du nord au sud was presented at the Galerie POPOP (2022).

Démarche artistique

Florence Leblanc Dubois explore les thèmes de la lenteur, du temps et du souvenir. Dans un contexte de production rapide et frénétique, l’artiste s’interroge sur l’art dans notre quotidien et ce qui en devient lorsqu’on s’adonne à ralentir, à rêvasser et à regarder autour de soi. Celle-ci souhaite lancer une invitation à la douceur, incitant le spectateur à prendre ses aises autour de ses œuvres, s’en rapprocher pour s’y perdre et interpréter les formes qui s’en dégagent. Pour l’artiste, la capture d’images prend place lors de moments intimes, en connexion avec le présent, le lieu, le Soi et l’Autre. Après un temps de recul où le souvenir se dépose en chambre noire, elle laisse ensuite son imagination réinterpréter ses souvenirs grâce à la broderie, en écho avec son présent.

Florence Leblanc Dubois explores the themes of slowness, time and memory. In a context of rapid and frenetic production, the artist questions art in our daily lives and what happens to it when we slow down, daydream and look around. She wishes to launch an invitation to gentleness, encouraging the spectator to take his ease around her works, to get closer to them in order to lose himself in them and interpret the forms that emerge from them. For the artist, image capture takes place during intimate moments, in connection with the present, the place, the Self and the Other. After a period of hindsight where the memory is deposited in the darkroom, she then lets her imagination reinterpret her memories through embroidery, in echo with her present.
